Breaking Free from Frozen Shoulder: How Physiotherapy Helps Restore Mobility

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterised by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. It often develops gradually and can significantly restrict movement, making even simple tasks like reaching overhead or dressing challenging. Physiotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for frozen shoulder, helping individuals regain mobility and improve their quality of life.

What is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder occurs when the connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint becomes inflamed and thickened. This results in restricted movement and pain, which typically progresses through three stages:

  1. Freezing Stage: Gradual onset of pain and stiffness that worsens over time.
  2. Frozen Stage: Movement becomes increasingly limited, but pain may decrease.
  3. Thawing Stage: Gradual improvement in mobility and reduction in stiffness.

The condition can be caused by factors such as prolonged immobility, injury or underlying health conditions like diabetes.

The Role of Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy plays a critical role in the management and recovery of frozen shoulder. Through targeted techniques and exercises, physiotherapists aim to reduce pain, improve range of motion and restore shoulder function. Key elements of physiotherapy include:

  • Stretching Exercises: Gentle stretches help loosen the tight capsule around the shoulder joint, gradually increasing flexibility.
  • Strengthening Exercises: As mobility improves, strengthening exercises build muscle support around the joint to prevent future issues.
  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques such as joint mobilisation and soft tissue massage alleviate stiffness and enhance circulation.
  • Heat and Cold Therapy: Applying heat can relax the shoulder muscles before exercise, while cold therapy reduces inflammation and pain.

Each physiotherapy plan is tailored to the individual’s stage of frozen shoulder and level of discomfort. Consistency and adherence to prescribed exercises are key to achieving optimal results.

The Benefits of Early Intervention

Starting physiotherapy early in the progression of frozen shoulder can prevent further loss of mobility and shorten recovery time. Delaying treatment may prolong the condition and make it more difficult to regain full function.

Living Pain-Free

Frozen shoulder can be frustrating, but with the support of physiotherapy, individuals can reclaim their mobility and independence. A collaborative approach between patient and physiotherapist ensures that each step of the recovery process is customised to achieve long-term success.
